Charities and Missions September Report

Greetings Brothers.

I hope this finds everyone well as we slowly inch to a greater sense of normalcy.  As we continue to make progress against the Covid scourge, we need to continue to support those in need in our community with our charitable work.  St. Augustine wrote, “Charity is the root of all good works.” As Hibernians, we profess this in our Motto of “Friendship, Unity, and Christian Charity.”

The charitable works of this organization run deep and are carried out through a multitude of division events that provide meals to the hungry, food and personal items to local food pantries and community groups, assist the homeless, support veterans, raise funds to support seminarians, and create student scholarships to name a few.

The New York State AOH awards the Arnie Nagelhout award to recognize, annually, a Division that best reflects the meaning of our motto and commitment to charitable work.  This year, the Arnie Nagelhout Award was presented to St. Patrick’s Division 2, Babylon, Suffolk County.  Their charitable work included food drives, stocking local parishes and soup kitchens, and supporting United Veterans Beacon House. In addition, they raised funds for gift cards for seminarians, supporting and providing meals to essential healthcare workers (with a Pipe Band salute), gathering supplies by holding drive-through food and supply collections to name a few.  Congratulations to the leadership and members of St. Patrick’s Division 2.

In stepping into the position of NY State Chair for Charities and Missions, I am honored and humbled to follow those who have served before me.  Over the next two years, we will work to:

  • Increase the level of participation, recording and reporting of charitable works of division across New York State,

  •  Increase the awareness of the charitable work being done across the State,

  • Provide ongoing sharing and recognition of our charitable work through a variety of social media tools,

  • Provide “vehicles” for recording and reporting of charitable activities,

  • Increase support of the major charitable fundraising activities of the AOH.

I would like to express my gratitude and thanks to Matt Buckley for his kindness and generosity in providing me with a foundation to start my work from.

May we all keep those who face life’s daily struggles in our thoughts and prayers and may those who serve and protect us be kept safe and in our hearts.

“The greatest good is what we do for one another.” Mother Teresa
