New Website Feature, the Event Calendar

The New York State Board has added an event calendar to the New YorK State Website. You can find it at www.nyaoh.com/events.

We will be putting on the calendar various State, County and Division sponsored events throughout the year and your and your division can submit events to be posted on this calendar.

Now, we are only going to post events that benefit the Hibernian Division, for example, the Irish 2000 Festival in Saratoga, the Hudson Valley Irish Fest, and the Nassau County Feis are run by corporations, but the members that  run these events are Hibernians and the events benefit the underlying Counties and Divisions, so they will be posted.

An example of what not to submit is a local Knights of Columbus dinner, where maybe 10 members of the Divisions are also members of that Council. Since no benefit goes to the AOH, please do not submit it since it will not be posted. Also please do not submit division meetings. They are already listed on the division directory, so there is no need to list them twice.

When posting events, please send in a word document that can be copied and pasted or type directly into the email information about the event. Do not send a PDF as many times they can’t be copied and pasted. PDFs will not be accepted. The address of the event, including the zip code and phone number of the location. Include the Date, the Time, and the Sponsoring Division. Also include the Contact Person’s Name, Phone Number and Email Address.

And please send it to calendar@nyaoh.com or nyaohcalendar@gmail.com to submit it. You can contact me at 516-515-0484 for any questions.

President’s Message

The spring NYS Board Meeting is behind us. I would like to thank Fr. Henry Reid for saying the Mass and Peter Durkee for his work setting up the weekend.

By now, I hope everyone has their National Convention Delegates lined up, rooms re-served and packages purchased. I look forward to a FULL delegation. Anyone who would like to assist with the hospitality room should see Jim Burke at the Turning Stone.

All County and Division Presidents should have received a letter and flier from AOH/NYS Pro-Life Chairman, Matt Nelligan, and myself. Any donation you can make to Camp Esther would be greatly appreciated.

In closing, I would like to thank the New York State Board for giving me their unanimous endorsement for the office of AOH National Director.

New York News

AOH Oswego, NY, hosted international group “Enter the Haggis” at their 2nd Annual “1/2 Way to St. Patrick’s Day Party”!

AOH Dean Michael Barry Division 1 in Oswego celebrated their 2nd annual “1/2 Way to St. Patrick’s Day Party” on September 17. Headlining the event was the international Canadian band “Enter the Haggis” (ETH), who just released their 7th album.

Each year the Hibernians sponsor a large party at their AOH Hall with bagpipers, step dancers, Irish food and beverages, a bake sale and more. “This year we gave the party a shot of steroids,” said President Tim Kirwan, “by inviting this well known progressive rock/Celtic band. Three music acts headlined the entertainment outside, including 2 local bands and then ETH. Many volunteers came forward to make this well attended event a big success. “The weather couldn’t have been better, nor the music and the company,” Mike Callahan, an AOH member that handles public relations for and a member of the AOH declared. It looks like this annual party is here to stay and ETH showed great interest in coming back next year. This division continues to grow monthly, with approximately 250 full members and 150 social members.

NY Board endorses Moore, McKay, McNabb, McLean

The New York State Board held its semi-annual meeting on October 22 in Schenectady. The day began with the state board’s annual Pro Life Mass, with Deputy National Chaplin Fr. Henry Reid as the main concelebrant. Fr. Reid is also the New York State Chaplin.

State President Michael McNabb led the well-attended meeting held afterwards, at which Immediate Past State President Charles (Chip) McLean announced his candidacy for National Director. The state board endorsed his bid. Pennsylvania’s Denny Donnelly announced he’s running for National Director, and current National Director Jere Cole announced he would seek reelection.

Also at the meeting, National Vice President Brendan Moore received a standing-ovation endorsement of the state board for his candidacy for the office of National President. The state board endorsed National Secretary Tom McNabb as well, and current National Treasurer Judge Jim McKay was endorsed for the office of National Vice President.

National Director Danny O’Connell announced he will run for National Treasurer.

Later in the day, our able and generous hosts, the Schenectady Division, organized our annual bowling tournament at which many of the finest AOH and LAOH athletes competed. The laughs, the feeling of Hibernian camaraderie, and the fun of the sport made for a great afternoon. The subsequent buffet dinner and tournament awards presentations at the Schenectady Division Hibernian Hall were an informal and happy way to end the day.

— John C. O’Connell, state director, publicity chairman

New York State Elects New Officers

One of the main reasons the New York State Board of the Ancient Order of Hibernians meets every two years in convention is to elect its new board of officers.

The 2011 gathering in Pearl River was no exception.

Michael J. McNabb of Auburn, NY ran unopposed for the position of President, while James Burke of Massapequa, NY and Timothy McSweeney of Selkirk, NY also were elected to the to the positions of Vice President and Secretary, respectively without any competition.

That didn’t mean there wasn’t drama. Victor J. Vogel, who hails from Islip, NY won a three person race for State Treasurer. Vogel beat out Thomas Beirne and John Hyland for the position.

The other competitive race was for the site of the 2013 convention where Saratoga, NY bested Nassau County for the location, which will take place from July 10 – July 13, 2013.

The fully elected appointed board can be viewed on our officers page.
