7 A-side Adult Gaelic Football Tournament a Success

The NY State AOH held their first Annual 7 a side Adult Gaelic Football Tournament in Gaelic Park on Sunday April 8th.  Ten teams participated in the competition.  The teams hailed from Nassau County, Suffolk County, Connecticut, Boston, Manhattan, Queens, and the Bronx.   The opening teams paraded around the field behind a group of approximately 40 musicians from three different pipe bands – The Kerry Pipers, Glor na Gael, and Tara Pipes and Drums.

The games were exciting and played at a fast pace.  A large group of Hibernians and true Gaelic lovers braved the cold weather to show their support.

St. Barnabas were the triumphant team who took home the cups!  They beat NY Celtics in the final of the B Division and they beat the Aidan McAnespies from Boston in a closely contested match in the final of the A Division.  Hats off to St. Barnabas!  This team calls the Bronx home.  All their players are Irish American.  They came up through the ranks from the NY Minor Board of the GAA.

All the money raised from this event will go directly to college scholarships for students active in the Gaelic Athletic program.  We plan on making this an annual event.  What better way to promote our Irish heritage and culture!  These young Irish Americans are the future members of the AOH and LAOH.  Let them know who we are what we stand for.

1st Annual Adult Gaelic Football Tournament

On behalf of the New York State Board, I am delighted to announce our First Annual Adult Gaelic Football Tournament!  I know we have plenty of Hibernians across the state who have never seen a game of Gaelic Football live, or have never been to Gaelic Park.  Well now is the time so mark your calendars for Sunday April 8th!

Thanks to Vic Vogel, our New York State President for coming up with this idea, and thanks to the New York State Board for sponsoring this event.  The games will be played with a seven-man format, instead of the normal 15 a-side.  It is played at a fast pace and very entertaining to watch. We expect to have 10 teams competing.  The tournament will be held on Sunday April 8th at Gaelic Park in the Bronx from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.  Admission is only $10. This will be a fun-filled day of Gaelic football at the highest level.  Of course, food will be served and the bar will be open for your pleasure.

A group of Piper’s will lead the opening ceremony and parade the teams around the park.  If you are involved in a pipe band and would like to participate, please contact our worthy State President, Vic Vogel.

All proceeds from this event will go towards college scholarships for students active in the Gaelic Athletic program, both boys and girls.  If you as an individual your division or County would consider making a donation it would be greatly appreciated.   I am also looking for donations from the LAOH.  In New York State, the GAA Minor Board have over 2,000 members registered between the ages of 6 /18.  Approximately 20% of these members are female.

These young people are the future of our organizations.  It is important that we let them know who we are and what we stand for. All donations no matter how small would be greatly appreciated.

Please make checks payable to New York State Board and put in the memo GAA scholarships. Checks can be mailed to Michael Byrne, PO Box 363, Huntington, NY 11743.

Thank you in advance for your support and hope to see you in Gaelic Park on April 8th.  It is important that we support our Irish heritage and culture!

Respectfully submitted.
