In Memoriam: Jerry Collins of Division #5 Bronx County

 

 

 

Gerald J. “Jerry” Collins passed away on June 14, 2018. Proud Veteran of the US Navy, he served as Chaplain of the American Legion, Charles N. Bajart, Jr. Post 1122. Jerry worked as a Verizon employee for 50 years and he was very dedicated to his neighborhood of McLean Heights. He was a proud member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) Division #5 of The Bronx and also served on the Executive Board of the Yonkers St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee.

The beloved husband of Barbara and father of Keith (Jamie). Cherished Pa Booey of Dominic, Christopher and Juliana. He is also survived by his brother Kevin, his many friends, co-workers and a grateful neighborhood.

Visiting hours will be held Monday, June 18th from 2:00 – 9:00 PM at Hodder Farenga Funeral Home 899 McLean Ave., Yonkers. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, June 19th at 12:00 PM at St. Barnabas Church, Bronx. Interment to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery.

AOH Division #5 Bronx County will hold its Annual “Spirit of 1916” Awards Event on Sunday, October 22, 2017 from 3 pm – 7 pm at The Rambling House. More information to be announced!!!

Bronx Divisions #5 and #7 Officers Installed at County Christmas Gathering

 

AOH Bronx County President Bob Nolan conducts Officer Installation Ceremony for Divisions #5 and #7.

 

The AOH Bronx County Board held its Annual Christmas Party and Division Officer Installation Ceremony on Wednesday, December 14 at the American Legion-Charles Bajart Post on McLean Avenue in Yonkers, NY.

Bronx County President Bob Nolan presided over the event , where officers from both Division #5 and Division #7 of the Bronx were installed.  President Nolan noted that the AOH is currently experiencing renewed interest and growth in the County.

National and State officers in attendance included National Director Dan Dennehy, NYS Treasurer John Manning, and NYS District #4 Director Tom Beirne.

Martin Galvin was installed as President of Division #5 and Tim O’Donoghue was installed as President of Division #7.

 

 

Bronx Division #5 Hosts Annual Awards Ceremony in Woodlawn

AOH Division #5 Bronx/Woodlawn held its annual “Spirit of 1916” Awards Benefit on Sunday, October 16th at The Rambling House Bar & Restaurant in Woodlawn, Bronx, NY. Honorees included Monsignor Edward Barry, Dan Dennehy (National Director, AOH), and the Irish Deportees marking the 20th anniversary of their case. A special award was presented to The Tallon Family in memory of FDNY Firefighter Sean Tallon who lost his life on 9/11. Additionally, grants were presented to the Emerald Isle Immigration Center, the Aisling Irish Community Center, and the Deirdre O’ Mara School of Irish Dance.

A special award was presented to the Irish Political Deportees marking the 20th anniversary of their case, which included Charlie Caulfield, Noel Gaynor, Joyce Crossan (wife of the late Kevin Crossan), Brian Pearson, Robbie McErlean, Matt Morrisson, and Gabe Megahey.

Joe McManus (president, AOH Division 3-Bronx), AOH NYS President Tim McSweeney, Martin Galvin (president, AOH Division 5), and NYS Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz who presented a legislative resolution proclaimed by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo declaring April 24, 2016 as 'Irish Republic Day' to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising.

Bronx/Yonkers Divisions Award Barry Medals to Catholic School Graduates

Commodore John Barry – Father of the American Navy

     AOH Divisions in The Bronx and Yonkers announced this year’s recipients of The Commodore John Barry Memorial Medal. The Commodore John Barry Medal is presented to a graduating Catholic School Elementary Student who has excelled in U.S. History/Social Studies.

     The Bronx County AOH began the Barry Medal Program over 50 years ago and includes over 20 schools participating, The program expanded into Yonkers in 2009 and includes 7 schools.

     The award consists of a Certificate of Recognition and a Medal that is worn around the neck. The medals were presented at numerous Graduation Ceremonies during the weekend of June 10th.
