Peekskill Division #18 Hosts Annual Hudson Valley Irish Festival

Thousands of lovers of Irish Culture attended the 8th Hudson Valley Irish Fest held Sat. Sept 24 enjoyed beautiful Autumn weather on the banks of Hudson River in Peekskill.

Highlights included Irish artists Mundy and Aoife Scott together onstage, a great trad and spoken word Tents, a 9/11 memorial with massed pipes and drum bands and family favorite children’s area with 18th Century toys & games and clothing. The United States Cadet Corps Pipes and Drums and Irish Step Dancers were another highlight, all cadets from USMA West Point.

HVIF Inc Chairman and AOH National Director Dan Dennehy said, “This is the most beautiful scenic Fest anywhere. We thank the many donors, artists, volunteers, municipal workers and visitors who help our Peekskill based not for profit Hudson Valley Irish Center bring our Heritage to the greater community each year.”

Dennehy also said the Fest could not be possible without the support of the NY Irish Consulate and families of our members in AOH & LAOH Division 18 Peekskill.

The Hudson Valley Irish Fest returns to Peekskill’s Riverfront Green on Saturday,
September 24, 2016. The Fest will run from 11a.m. to 7 p.m. rain or shine. Admission is
$10 per person, ages 12 and under Free. No coolers or non-service animals permitted.

The community-based, not for profit cultural event was established to celebrate
and promote the rich Irish-American heritage that exists in the lower Hudson Valley.
Dan Dennehy, the organization’s chairman states, “Year round planning and great
community collaboration bring this celebration of Ireland and Irish America to the
Hudson Valley. Please join us on September 24 at this beautiful location.”

Headliners Mundy, Aoife Scott, the Narrowbacks, ‘Roses in the Garden’ a variety
show by the NY NJ Rose of Tralee Center, Tim Murphy and massed pipe bands. The Jack
McAndrew Memorial Traditional Tent features Irish recording artists Mary Courtney,
Donie Carroll, talented local Irish step dancers, renowned traditional Irish musicians and
a new children’s seisiun between 11am and 1pm. The spoken word tend features bestselling
authors, historians, poets, storytellers and historical displays.

In addition, the Fest features the work of outstanding artists and craftspeople from
both Ireland and the Hudson Valley. There also is an interactive children’s area featuring
‘18th Century Toys & Games’ also storytelling, crafts, and other activities. A wide variety
of tempting food and refreshments from area restaurants and Irish products will be
available. This welcoming and fun family day of Irish Culture would not be possible
without an annual grant from the Consulate General of Ireland NY through Emigrant
Support Program of the Foreign Affairs Department, says Dennehy.

Visitors are encouraged to take MTA Metro-North’s Hudson Line to Peekskill
train station, immediately adjacent to the beautiful Riverfront Green, and a wonderful 1
hour ride along the Hudson River from GCT. Ample free parking is also available.

On Sunday, January 10, 2016 Division 18 Peekskill held The Annual Installation of Officers at the Hibernian Hall in Hudson Valley Irish Center at Verplanck New York. Visiting were New York State President Tim McSweeney, who was the installing Officer and NYS FFAI Chair Ciaran Geraghty, who participated in the Installation with Westchester County President Aidan O’Kelly Lynch and National immigration Chair Dan Dennehy. Division president Clive Cronin was installed for the second term of office. Also in attendance were members of LAOH Division 18 and members of the community and their families.
