The NY State Board spring meeting weekend started early in East Durham on Friday, May 4, 2018 with the NYS AOH James F. Hayes Golf Classic and the Austin V. Carew Scholarship Fund event held at Sunny Hill Golf Course.
The spring meeting took place the next morning on at the Shamrock House. The meeting was well attended with a standing-room only crowd. AOH members in attendance from across the Empire State heard board officers and committee chairs report on activities that occurred since the last board meeting in the fall.
Reports included the success of the “Ireland’s 1918 Freedom Mandate” event which took place on April 24th at the New York State Capitol Building, the formation of two new divisions in Westchester and Queens and other reports on polictical education, immigration, charity and missions and district director reports.
Members were also introduced to the new Executive Director of the Irish American History Museum (IAHM) in Albany. Dr. Elizabeth Stack thanked the NY AOH membership for their unwavering support of the museum and its mission and spoke passionately about her own experiences as a immigrant.
On hand for the meeting were National Board officers: President Hon. James F. McKay III, Vice President Daniel O’Connell, Secretary Jere E. Cole, Jr., and Treasurer Sean Pender along with National Directors: Liam McNabb, Dan Dennehy, Denny Parks, and Bill Sullivan. Other national committee chairs were also in attendance.
During the meeting, members from the many divisons who submitted their annual Charity and Missions report were presented with certificates of recognition for all the charitable activities carried out by their brothers in their divisions.
President Vic Vogel announced a new initiative to have at least one Irish language Mass be said in each of the many NYAOH counties and districts. Upcoming events were discussed including the upcoming National AOH/LAOH Biennial Convention which will take place at the Galt House in Louisville, KY, July 11 – 14th, 2018. The 2019 NYS State Convention Chair, Liam McNabb released information for the NYS AOH/LAOH Convention which will be held in July 2019.
Saturday afternoon festivities included Father Henry Reid’s BBQ Fundraiser held at McGrath’s Edgewater Resort and LAOH fundraisers and Kentuckey Derby events held at Gavins. The weekend was capped off with a well attended Sunday Pilgramage Mass which was held at the Our Lady of Knock Shrine.
