Knock Visionary John Curry Laid to Rest At St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral

Members of the AOH were honored to participate in a very special Mass that was held this weekend at The Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral in New York City.

John Curry, one of the 15 witnesses to the apparition of the Virgin Mary in Knock, Ireland in 1879 was reinterred in the walled cemetery on the Basilica grounds after a Requiem Mass celebrated by Timothy Cardinal Dolan.

It was discovered several years ago that John Curry had been placed in an unmarked grave on Long Island after his death in 1943. Cardinal Dolan, along with Fr. Gibbons, the Pastor of Knock Shrine worked to have his remains brought to St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral for a proper Christian Burial.

Members of the Ancient Order of Hibernians assisted in the celebration of the Mass. The AOH Capital District Honor Guard was also present and worked with the Knights of Columbus in ensuring the ceremony was respectful and dignified. Several AOH Chaplains con-celebrated the Mass and were lead by State Chaplain Fr. Henry Reid.

The New York State Board congratulates National Hunger Chairman Thomas Beirne and his committee on helping to organize a very successful and solemn event!
